Whatever it was yesterday....today is this...

I think of recluse masters a century away,

I nurture your secrets. Your true nature

eludes me here, but taken by quiet, I can

linger this exquisite moon on out to the end.

                                         —T’ao Ch’ien

quietness abounds,

unfolding breaths, touch-less silence

soothing shadowed chatter

to background

**

Shadowed bamboo

quivering, dripping

passing rain drops.

**

After days of following the ants

here and there, as they say ought be done,

closing each door as found,

they turn, on the other side, another way,

without so much as good-bye.

**

after Simon Ortiz

we can’t speak ever

what words won’t say,

so, who speaks, poet,

whose songs are sung

in our singing—is it that we

just hum what’s heard ?

**

I’m old; but the old man

with long silver hair

says, “first say a prayer—

first make coffee,”

as if he’s waited

all these years

to say it

just to me.

**

Rains have passed.

Morning clouds break to white, lift

to meet the rising sun.

The universe has its own language.

The master threw the student’s books

into the river—the poems

never stopped.

What the river says

is what I say.

**

answerless, the crow drops

from the great eucalyptus

without a call

**

Two shots, one each arm—

the whole body aches its way

to health—no soaring here.

**

I stumble across an old poem today,

written ten years ago to the month,

leaning against rocks in the Sierra,

preparing to turn sixty-nine.

And I wonder, after cleaning the house,

where all the chance for wisdom went.

Didn’t find it there, can’t seem to find it here.

But the carpet’s clean, dustless floors feel good

to bared feet—and like then, I’m here now,

so I write.

**

First day of fall, the open saddle

of the State Park,

summer temperatures returning,

seed-puffs dancing

to what breezes

don’t say.

**

Can’t really say why

people working words

for reasons

they likely can’t say

catches me like it seems

it does them,

but it does and I’ve gone

and continue to go with it

as readily as rust

to an empty tin can can,

looking, I’d guess, for what

filled it in the first place.

**

Morning glory

reaching tendrils,

tides of spreading green,

purple-white petals,

quietly playing sunlight.

**

Never-flowering fig trees

simply ripen round plump purple

fruit that droops among the leaves,

invariably beyond reach.

**

sparse traces of early stars

say big dipper says

which way

north is

**

Late September’s early fall

holds darkness longer, calls it

earlier evenings,

shares season’s shiftings

without claim,

opens October’s door

for longer, more colorful

considerations.

**

Being means breathing,

deeper, therefore,

more carefully there

at the breath,

where everything, for us,

always was, always really is

—all attempts to hold it,

wrong-headed, learning to go

with it, the holding of reason

beyond all reason.

**

**

Light requires nothing, asks nothing

of us, not even that we turn to it

as it embraces us.

Inescapable intimacies

Post card poemto Noreen, Durham NH

Two of our three children were born

in Derry, NH, almost fifty years ago now,

but beyond shared history in New Hampshire,

what captures my attention today

is the intentions you and I share while reading

these scratches and swirls—we two,

thousands of miles, thousands of minutes

apart, we two, bent over this same card,

trying to discern what it says, says more

than any card can ever hope to say.

**

The older I get, the less certain

I am about most everything,

but breathing-space helps

and the care close attention allows

just in the doing—even the teen

with ear phones and hoodie,

the one who doesn’t look up

when it’s only us two on the street,

knows I’m here

and earth steadily deepens,

sky is immeasurably wider.

**

—after Robert Aitken

Be careful

not to confine Buddha

to the cortex.

**

without words and without fail,

the morning walk, the setting that sets

it all right most every time

**

—for Matthew

Sipping that green powder cha,

even when not whisked well,

quietly quiets.

**

Those inner rhythms of relation,

our own lives within the universe

working within—the weave

of inescapable intimacies.

**

high, the crescent moon curls under itself,

curling fog folding over the ridge,

and around my jacket-less chest,

the chill

**

just before the sun,

almost-salmon horizon-light

reaches to touch the face

of the shimmered bay

and its grey glows back

**

—solitude

when you are up early,

then my early isn’t enough

**

That into which world opens

spreads before morning feet

making detail day takes in

its own way

spreading world’s way

among probing feet

making this way

the day.

**

It’s said

the zen way

of saying

leaves unsaid

that which others

might better

say themselves.

**

squirrels scatter

along the way, all of them

black today, but one,

its tail tipped white-grey

**

An invitation to read

sparks flurries of memories,

openings and insight

and alone in the kitchen,

I make coffee, find the way

to the flowerless altar,

take up the pen

   to fall to the page

in the fullness of it all.

**

Shinran speaks to us a language we know

even before speaking,

that of fog and overcast skies that block

the sun and dim, but do not, cannot

hold back the light: falling, settling,

details on details unfolding,

both within and because of…

**

The potato patch, year after year abundance—

just stay out of its way, and harvest.

Dirt, roots, sun and sky, occasional water—easy.

It’s been that way for me too.

**

—wasan: soft verses of praise

soft” as in ordinary spoken,

readily written Japanese, not special,

not scholarly, not parsed to grip,

but easily said, easily read, remembered—

good on the tongue, fine to the ear

songs pleased to be sung.

wasan: joyous encounters

with life-given sounds

fully lived

**

Turns out I had to leave and to search

to reach what was never left, had to cease

what meant most to feel its absence

unnecessary.

**

It’s September. And that’s significant

in some inarticulable way: perceptible shifts

nudging momentum of its own.

It’s September, and the third day in reveals sun

rising dead east, the morning cup better bitter,

stiff and tired legs better than OK, and all of it,

all of it so compelling, so deserving

of closest attention and telling, yet somehow

enough off-reach and beyond, that saying

doesn’t work, only pointing will do,

and neither does that either…September…

**

day 4

It’s still-September,

pre-dawn light settling in air

without chill, distant hills

shadowed silence,

only the sun’s noise, open,

slow-stroked waves, sharp cracks,

fire-edging outlines

of things to come.

**

If so inclined, please mark these words

because although “mine,” past experience

tells me I’ll need them said again, likely

another way—that nembutsu,

Buddha’s name uttered, namu-amida-butsu

like buddha-breath, buddha-nature

cannot be limited

to any single formulation,

because it’s not the nature

of the way it is…

and so, please take these verses

as instances of that which

I hope I’m talking about

and will again and again over the days…

namu-amida-butsu

namu-amida-butsu

Threads and weaves,

ripples and wrinkles…

We’ve lived with the ants before,

ongoing, day to day, in fact.

But time to time, their needs,

though difficult to describe

as greater than ours, overwhelm

nonetheless, and we clash.

I’ve learned, much like us,

as conditions change around colonies,

ants respond accordingly, every time,

so over time, we’ll adjust.

A poet whose name I cannot recall

speaks of “regions of kindness,”

both inner and outer, and sang too

of another poet of another time

whose songs insisted on light’s insistence

in our varied worlds.

Feeling for the pulse

the thinning of the illusion

life is ever apart from

death of what was

and the new

**

—Owl Canyon

Scat on hard-pack trails

is honest—

a discarded rocking chair

aside the trail,

just one more ass

not knowing its place.

**

A crusted poison oak leaf

lifts just enough to tumble

from under the slightly raised log

at my feet—trail-play.

**

Work in the garden, down in the yard,

is about as natural as it gets—you know,

tasks intended, and all those actually done.

**

after Ponge…

count if you so choose,

syllables do—

but know the venue

is between and among words

as they are written,

each a voice,

light and shadow

mingled, unsettled

among shifting letters,

ever in search of

new ways

to say…

**

Coming across the work

of teachers who helped bring me

the way I’ve come, energies reignite

illumined essentials the breath pulls up

for the sighed release of knowing

I do know how to take the next step.

**

Butterflies

tangle in the breeze,

flowers bob—

open-face,

open-wing spirit

and these unfolding

iterations of kind.

**

When light falls at angles,

shadows get a head start,

but never make it all the way.

**

“…all land is one,

            though some holds water.”

                                         —Edith Shiffert

**

Looking for the Sunday paper

in the courtyard,

I find scattered mental notes,

left behind from Saturday.

Can’t imagine why in the world

I was thinking that way.

**

The pen I write with fits my fingers

like made just for me. My jeans,

the same, like a glove, like the air

lining my lungs with life-stuff,

even without asking.

There’s work to be done, for sure,

inequities, mistakes, so many wrongs,

yet so much we get right, that’s gotten

right for us, just because, that it seems

we ought, time to time, give pause.

**

—post card poem, to Melody:

This simple act,

placing words appearing,

each their own distinct arrival,

making this making into what it will be,

because of, or in spite of, me.

**

Morning coughs-up crow calls,

two long strings of stuttered stuff,

a welcome counter-balance

to the talking heads

on the screen.

**

Winds left over

from last night

pummel the palms

waving outside

the windows

holding

their cries

out there.

**

Nearing its final pages,

the journal’s feel

thins, bone-to-bone

fingers slide

barely padded surface,

sense

unwanted

good-byes.

**

fog bunches the ridge line,

tumbles rutted canyons,

dripping words

**

The poems I like,

well, I don’t know

till they’re there.

**

you know it’s sky

because trees reach for it,

that there’s been water,

for the willows,

and the legs

always remember the mountains

**

noon-day heat

lifts from the earth,

brittled grasses

toss it to the air—

only mustard blossoms

carry color
